Description
The Kenmore 9084 is a genuine replacement refrigerator water filter for select Kenmore and Sears refrigerators. It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standards 42, 53, and 401, and lasts up to 6 months or 200 gallons.
Product Overview
The Kenmore 9084 refrigerator water filter is the factory replacement cartridge for a wide range of Kenmore side-by-side and bottom-freezer refrigerators. It installs inside the fresh-food compartment and connects to both your water dispenser and your ice maker, so every glass and every cube passes through the same filtration.
This cartridge carries three NSF/ANSI certifications, which is more than many replacement filters at this price. Standard 42 covers taste and odor, Standard 53 covers health-related contaminants including lead, and Standard 401 covers emerging contaminants such as certain pesticides and pharmaceuticals.
You may also see this filter listed as the 46-9084, 469084, or 4609084. All of these refer to the same part.
Will the Kenmore 9084 Fit My Refrigerator?
Before ordering, check your refrigerator's model number. You will find it on a sticker inside the fresh-food compartment, usually on the left-hand wall or behind the crisper drawers.
If you still have your old filter, the fastest check is simply to read the number printed on its label.

Filter Part Numbers This Replaces
This is the same physical cartridge sold under several different part numbers. If your current filter shows any of these, the 9084 is a direct fit:

The 9084 is the current part number. If your refrigerator manual specifies an older number such as 9005 or 9006, the 9084 is its direct replacement.
Important: 9084 Is Not the Same as 9083
These two part numbers are one digit apart but they are not interchangeable.

If the filter currently in your refrigerator reads 46-9083, 46-9030, EDR3RXD1, or 4396841, this is not the right cartridge for you. You need the Kenmore 9083 replacement refrigerator water filter instead.
Ordering the wrong one of these two is the most common mistake Kenmore owners make. Two seconds checking your old filter's label saves a return.

What Does the Kenmore 9084 Filter Reduce?
This filter is independently certified against three NSF/ANSI standards. Each covers a different category of contaminant:
NSF/ANSI 42 — Aesthetic effects
-
Chlorine taste and odor
-
Particulates and sediment
NSF/ANSI 53 — Health effects
-
Lead
-
Other heavy metals including mercury
-
Select volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
-
Cysts
NSF/ANSI 401 — Emerging contaminants
-
Select pesticides
-
Select pharmaceuticals
A certified filter reduces these contaminants to levels below the standard's limit. It does not remove them completely, and it is not a substitute for water testing if you have a known contamination issue. If you want a fuller breakdown of how carbon filtration works, our guide on what a refrigerator water filter removes covers it in detail.
Key Features and Benefits
-
Triple NSF certification. Certified to Standards 42, 53, and 401, covering taste, health contaminants, and emerging contaminants.
-
Filters water and ice. The same cartridge feeds both your dispenser and your ice maker.
-
Maintains normal flow rate. Designed to the original flow specification, so your dispenser fills at full speed.
-
Tool-free install. Quarter-turn cartridge. No tools, no water line shut-off, no plumber.
-
Six months of coverage. 200-gallon rated capacity for typical household use.
-
BPA-free housing. Food-grade plastic throughout.
How to Install the Kenmore 9084
Installation takes about two minutes.
-
Find the filter. Open the fresh-food compartment and look at the upper right, near the ceiling. There is a small flip-down cover. The filter is behind it. It is not in the base grille and not in the freezer.
-
Open the cover and turn the old cartridge counterclockwise about a quarter turn until it releases.
-
Pull the old filter straight out. A small amount of water may drip. Keep a towel underneath.
-
Remove the protective cap from the new 9084 and check the O-rings are seated properly.
-
Insert the new filter and turn it clockwise a quarter turn until it stops. It should feel firm, not loose.
-
Flush the system. Run about 2 to 3 gallons through the dispenser to clear carbon fines and trapped air. The water may look cloudy or sputter at first — this is normal and clears within a few minutes.
-
Reset the filter indicator. Press and hold the filter reset button on your control panel for about 3 seconds until the light changes. Check your owner's manual for your model's exact sequence.

When Should You Replace This Filter?
Replace the 9084 every 6 months or 200 gallons, whichever comes first. Replace sooner if you notice:
-
Water flow slowing noticeably from the dispenser
-
Chlorine taste or odor returning
-
Ice tasting stale or cloudy cubes forming
-
The filter indicator light turning red or orange
Large households, heavy ice-maker use, and hard water all shorten filter life. If you are unsure of your timing, our guide on signs you need to replace your fridge water filter covers what to watch for.
A used cartridge cannot be cleaned and reused. Once the carbon is saturated, rinsing does nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Kenmore 9084 the same as the 46-9084?
Yes. 9084, 46-9084, 469084, and 4609084 all refer to the same filter. Kenmore part numbers are commonly written with or without the 46 prefix.
Will the 9084 fit my refrigerator?
It fits select Kenmore side-by-side and bottom-freezer models. Check your model number against the list above, or read the part number printed on your current filter. If neither matches, send us your model number and we will confirm.
Does the 9084 replace the 9005, 9006, or 9992?
Yes. The 9084 is the current part number and directly replaces the older 9005, 9006, and 9992 cartridges, as well as superseded numbers 12589203, 12589206, 67006468, and 67006634.
Can I use the 9084 instead of the 9083?
No. Despite the similar numbers these are physically different cartridges with different locking mechanisms. The 9084 is a twist-in filter and the 9083 is a push-button filter. Neither fits the other's housing.
Is this the same as the EveryDrop Filter 4 or UKF8001?
It is the same cartridge style and fits the same housings. The 9084 is the Kenmore-branded version of this widely used filter, which also appears as EDR4RXD1, Filter 4, 4396395, and UKF8001.
How long does the Kenmore 9084 last?
Up to 6 months or 200 gallons, whichever comes first. Heavy ice-maker use or hard water may shorten this.
What does this filter reduce?
Chlorine taste and odor, lead and other heavy metals, select VOCs, cysts, and select pesticides and pharmaceuticals, per its NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 401 certifications.
Do I need tools to install it?
No. The cartridge locks in with a quarter turn. You do not need tools and you do not need to shut off your water supply.
Why is my water cloudy after installing a new filter?
Trapped air, and it is completely normal. Run 2 to 3 gallons through the dispenser and it clears.
Where is the filter located in my refrigerator?
Inside the fresh-food compartment at the upper right, behind a small flip-down cover near the ceiling. It is not in the base grille.
Can I clean and reuse this filter?
No. Carbon block filters are single-use. Once the media is saturated it must be replaced.
