What Does the Sub-Zero 4204490 Water Filter Reduce?

The 4204490 is certified to NSF/ANSI Standards 42 and 53. It is tested to reduce the following contaminants:

  • Asbestos

  • Atrazine

  • Benzene

  • Carbofuran

  • Chlorine taste and odor

  • Cysts

  • Dichlorobenzene

  • Lead

  • Lindane

  • Mercury

  • Particulates and turbidity

  • Toxaphene

Every glass of water and every ice cube passes through this filter before reaching the dispenser. The 750-gallon capacity supports approximately 6 months of typical household use.

How the Sub-Zero Air Purification System Works

The Sub-Zero air purification system uses a fan inside the refrigerator to circulate air through the 7042798 cartridge approximately every 20 minutes. This continuous cycle works to reduce ethylene gas released by produce and help manage food odors inside the refrigerator compartment.

When the cartridge reaches the end of its service life, the air purification indicator on the control panel begins to flash. A steady indicator light means the system is functioning normally and no action is needed.

How to Install Both Filters

Installing the Sub-Zero 4204490 Water Filter

  1. Locate the filter housing inside the refrigerator compartment.

  2. Turn the old filter counterclockwise and pull it out.

  3. Remove the new 4204490 filter from its packaging.

  4. Insert the new filter and turn clockwise until it locks into position.

  5. Run approximately 2 gallons of water through the dispenser to flush the new filter.

  6. Reset the water filter indicator on the control panel.

Installing the Sub-Zero 7042798 Air Purification Cartridge

  1. Grasp the outside cartridge cover from the bottom and rotate it upward to open. (For drawer models, rotate from the top downward.)

  2. Grasp the black inner cover from the top and rotate downward. The cartridge will pop out.

  3. Remove the old cartridge.

  4. Take the new 7042798 cartridge out of its packaging.

  5. Insert it with the connector pointing downward.

  6. Close the black inner cover, then rotate the outer cover back down until it closes against the back wall.

  7. Reset: On the control panel, press and hold PURE AIR for 5 seconds. The indicator will appear in the display but will no longer flash. This confirms the cartridge life cycle has reset for approximately one year.

Both filters install without any tools.

When Should You Replace Each Filter?

4204490 Water Filter

Replace approximately every 6 months or 750 gallons, whichever comes first. Signs it is time to replace:

  • Water tastes or smells different than usual

  • Water flow from the dispenser is noticeably slower

  • The water filter indicator light turns on or begins flashing

7042798 Air Purification Cartridge

Replace when the air purification indicator begins to flash, or after approximately one year. Signs it is time to replace:

  • The PURE AIR icon flashes on the control panel

  • Food odors inside the refrigerator become more noticeable

  • Approximately one year has passed since the last replacement

Replacing both filters together during your annual maintenance visit helps keep your Sub-Zero running as designed. For a detailed guide on signs that your filter needs attention, visit signs your sub zero filter needs replacement.
